All of our exterior deck stains are Semi-Transparent Oil Stains which means

you can still see the wood grain through the color.

Before we tell you how to apply it - Remember 3 Major Rules

1) EXTERIOR (Outdoor) ONLY

2) Do not apply on painted surfaces or

surfaces that have been sealed with a solid stain

3) Do NOT use a pump sprayer to apply it

HOW TO APPLY OUTDOOR STAIN:

The 1st Step is to always check the deck. New stain cannot soak into the wood if the deck is already sealed so you should do the water drop test: Drop a few beads of water onto your deck. If the beads sit on top (like it would on wax paper) then you have to sand the rest of your deck finish off to get to the bare wood underneath. If the water soaks right into the wood then your deck is ready to be stained/sealed with Thompson's Water Seal.

The 2nd step is to CLEAN the deck. If you skip this step, any stains or marks that are currently on your deck will be sealed in and stay there. Anything peeling will continue to peel. Remove all peeling chunks and also remove any dirt, grease, soot, oil, or any other contaminants. You should clean the entire deck for the best looking results. There are heavy deck cleaning chemicals available for difficult stains.

-- Wait 2 full days and keep the surface dry after cleaning it for best results --

Now the 3rd step is to actually apply the stain. We do not recommend doing this on very hot days or in direct sunlight as surface AND air temperatures should be between 50 - 95 degrees. We also do not recommend thinning out the stain with paint thinner. We do recommend shaking and stirring the stain before using it.

TIPS FOR OUTDOOR STAIN APPLICATION

-- Use an exterior paint pad, paint brush, or roller to apply the stain. If you use a roller - Make sure you go over it anyway with a brush as you do it to ensure even coverage!

-- Keep the leading edge wet and distribute the stain evenly. This will avoid lap marks and keep the color uniform.

-- Divide large areas into smaller areas. Use natural breaks such as windows or doorsas boundaries to break the space up into an area that is easier to work with.

-- Brush top to bottom OR side to side in areas that are small enough to keep the leading edge wet at all times.

-- DRY TIME: Under normal conditions this will be dry to the touch in 4 hours. Clean all equipment with paint thinner and then rinse with soap and water.

Our Indoor Stains are Oil-Based Stains

Oil-based stains take longer to dry compared to water-based stains but oil-based stains last longer and usually look nicer when it dries. The only real advantages we find with water-based stains are that they have more choices in colors and less of an odor than oil-based stains.

We also do NOT carry stains that also have a finish mixed into them.

Stains soak into the wood and the finish is supposed to sit on top of the

wood and seal everything in so we do not like the less quality

results that you get by staining and finishing separately.

HOW TO APPLY INDOOR STAIN

-- 1st Step is to make sure the surface is ready to accept stain. Raw wood can accept stain but if you are re-finishing something, make sure the surface does not still have a finish coat or a shine to prevent the stain from absorbing into the wood. If there is still a finish on your surface, lightly remove it with light sandpaper (Usually #220 is enough).

-- 2nd step is to make sure the wood is clean. Clean any dirt, oil, grease, or any other contaminants off of the wood. Sand any nicks or scratches out as stain generally makes them more noticeable, not less. DUST can prevent a nice smooth finish so vacuum the dust off of the surface (as opposed to brushing it and blowing it around the air) and wipe the surface with a lightly damp cloth.

-- 3rd step is to apply the stain to get the desired color you are happy with. Stain gets darker the more you put on but you want to be careful of your timing. Use proper lighting to see any stain that is not absorbing into the wood and wipe it off with a dry cloth to prevent issues with applying the polyurethane finish.

-- 4th step is to apply a protective finish such as a satin or high gloss polyurethane finish. Stain changes the color but it has no protection at all to the wood. The finish protects the wood from damage, it improves the appearance depending on which type of shine you like, and it makes it easier to clean later. The Minwax brand Polyurethane can be done in 2 coats while other brands usually require 3 coats. Polyurethane is also the best type of finish to use as opposed to shellac or varnish. Varnish is great but expensive and really more for situations around a lot of moisture and shellac is not as durable as polyurethane.

TIPS FOR INDOOR STAIN APPLICATION

-- ALWAYS stir stain or finishes, DO NOT SHAKE THE CAN! This will only causes unwanted bubbles.

-- Apply stain with a natural bristle brush, a cloth, or a foam applicator. Polyurethane finish should be applied with a paint brush.

-- Test a small spot under furniture or in a corner first to make sure you like what this color stain does to the wood you are using. Even wood within the same species can vary from tree to tree so avoid surprises by testing a small spot first.

-- Different types of wood accept stain differently. It is a good idea to know which species of wood (Oak, Birch, Maple, Mahogany, etc.) so that you know whether stain will work well with it or not. Ask us if the species of wood you are using is good for staining.

-- Apply 2 coats, waiting 4-6 hours between coats. Do the same for Polyurethane finish but you will need to sand the shine down with #220 Sandpaper if you are using a high gloss polyurethane.

-- DRY TIME: 4-6 hours for a second coat, fully dry in 8 hours. Clean equipment with Paint Thinner.

PRIMER

Which primer do you need?

REGULAR PRIMER is for anything new or anything that has never been primed before. You also use regular primer when you are painting a lighter shade of color on top of a darker shade of color.

BIN STAIN KILLING PRIMER is for concealing damage. If there are very dark stains (such as from smoke or water) then just painting over them is not good enough. The stain will just bleed through regular paint. BIN is an alcohol-based primer that seals the damage in so that you can paint on top.

KILZ STAIN KILLING PRIMER is similar to BIN but it is slightly less quality and therefore it is also less expensive. The drawback to using this type is that it is very shiny so if the paint you are putting on top of it is not as shiny, then you may need to paint over it more than once.
